My new GTX motor is stout!
Posted by: markz - 09-06-18, 07:53 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

I know its not my Coronet, but it is a Mopar! Some of you may remember that I am building my mid life crisis car - 69 GTX street/strip.

The new motor hit the dyno yesterday. Specs are:

new aftermarket "The Block"
505 CI
OOTB TrickFlow 270 heads
Mopar Performance 337 intake
4150 carb - flows 1000 cfm
solid roller cam around 650 lift smaller duration
10.9:1 compression
93 pump gas
Hooker 5209 2 inch headers

Made 713 hp @ 6000 rpm and 707 ft/lbs torque at 4600 rpm. I did not expect that much torque - it makes the same torque as my race car motor!

I am very happy..........

  Worn Fuel Pump Pushrod
Posted by: 67RTBlue - 08-31-18, 10:11 PM - Forum: Tech Q&A - Replies (3)

Anyone ever have one? In trying to find out what was starving the engine I found out it was 1/4” short. It’s the original that has 70K on it. Interesting part is I bought a Mancini house made one and put it in. It was tight going in. I proceeded to tap it all the way in. Figured it would wear in. WRONG! It was so tight the fuel pump wasn’t able to push it back in! Now what! I tried working it by bumping the engine over and then pushing it back in. Not happening! I was using a big Allen wrench as a prybar to push the pushrod back in when I slipped. The wrench fell INSIDE THE ENGINE! F$&-!!!! At that point I slept on it. I have a stuck pushrod and now a 6” Allen wrench down in the block! Next day I pull the alternator for some peek a boo room. I drop a magnet into the fuel pump hole. By the stroke of gods hand it grabbed it! I POS bricks slowly pulling it up. I managed to get it near the hole and grabbed the bastard! WOW. Now back to the pushrod that’s stuck. I pull the distributor and can barely see the tip. I bump the engine to open a gap between the cam and rod. I then fabricated a bent tip rod and proceeded to tap the new bad pushrod out. That WORKED! How I survived both F ups I have no idea. Car runs better now and I hope no more problems!!!

  Made a fan shroud
Posted by: Mark's 69 - 08-21-18, 10:54 AM - Forum: DIY Tech Forum - Replies (8)

I got the idea from one of those Power Block show a while back when they made an air dam for an autocross truck. I made up a jig from some scrap wood, built the frame, and stretched a $2.50 fleece throw over it. This was my third attempt so I learned the jig and sewing the fleece in place worked best for me. Then I laid the fiberglass resin to it. Some sanding , a little bit of bondo to smooth it out , more sanding and a coat of paint and it's done.
I never really had overheating problems until they opened up the local airport for drag racing, then it got hot in the staging lanes. The radiator is a Summit universal fit so I was having trouble finding a shroud that I liked.

  Thank you Andy!

I've been working on the blue GTX on and off (mostly off) this summer. What was supposed to be just some routine maintenance turned out to be more... I removed the rear axles to replace the bearings, sent them out to a friend with NORS 40 year old bearing kits. When he finally got them together, he noticed that one of the axle splines was worn. After some guidance from Andy, I took the sure grip apart to find it needed a clutch kit and one spider gear. After both Andy and the manual very carefully warned me to make sure all the splines are lined up, I managed to screw up one side!

So first, thank you Andy for always offering phone help/guidance/support (sometimes emotional Mopar supportRofl). From the pics, you can see I remembered how you mounted the chuck to work on it. You can also see how I fixed the screw up! Five feet of leverage is about what I need to get the sure grip to slip and line up the splines.

This weekend was rather disappointing, I felt like I was banging my head on a brick wall. Problem after problem. Then finally I get the axle in only to find that the adjuster plate on the pass side is bent and then won't tighten up. Now off to find another bearing kit. If I'm lucky I might be able to drive this thing this winter.

...Anyone have a good set of snow tires?

On a side note, I was at a good friend (Chevy guy) of mines house, he found out I was working on the rear, and very enthusiastically pulled out a mounting jig for attaching any non Mopar chuck to an engine stand. I thanked him, and pointed out with Mopars you don't need those things. The look of joy faded quickly. LOL

Just putting it out there to anyone who’s never been. It is THE LARGEST car event in the world. Official day is next Saturday but events and cruising are already happening. Any car guy owes it to himself to try and attend once in his life.

This is my old car I saved from the crusher, it was only two cars away in line to get munched because the owner of the wrecking yard was getting evicted and was very upset.

I sold it to a buddy who had the funds to redo the car, I was a broke college kid at the time.
