Yet another new member with a questions about buying this car....
Posted by: kuhnsmith - 02-11-13, 12:39 PM - Forum: New Members - Replies (13)

I am looking for a mild-moderate project and have always been fascinated by cars like this:

http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/cto/3591776739.html

I'd be very appreciative of any comments or suggestions on whether this car is worth the price being asked for it and anything in particular that I should look out for on these cars.

Thanks!

Valve spring removal with head on car and no air compressor
Posted by: 67440Dodge - 02-10-13, 10:23 PM - Forum: DIY Tech Forum - Replies (3)

If you ever need to remove the valve springs off your motor and don't have a air compressor, you can still do it. It's also handy for motors with headers where the tubes may not allow a air hose to connect to the plug hole. Plus, you don't have to worry if your compressor craps out...

First, get some rope (I prefer nylon), that is just smaller than the plug hole. You don't need much, 2ft is more than enough. If it's nylon, burn the end so it doesn't fray going in and out of the plug hole. You'll also need a spring compressor like this one: 812. It also helps to have a magnetic rod to remove the keepers (or retrieve them when they've dropped).

Then, pull all the spark plugs, and remove the rocker shafts and pushrods.

Now, feed the rope into the plug hole. you don't need to feed alot in there, maybe 6-8" or so. Now, rotate the engine by the crank pulley (DO NOT USE THE STARTER, disconnect the battery just to be safe). when the engine binds, stop turning. Put the compressor on the valve and tighten down. Once the spring is compressed, you may have to tap the retainer to knock it loose from the keepers. Don't remove the keepers just yet.

Let the bottom of the spring rest on the head. The valve should stay in place as the rope holds it against the seat. If it does, remove the keepers and then remove the spring and retainer from the head. Now you can do whatever work you needed to do (swap springs, replace seals, etc). Then just follow the reverse to put it back together. Once you're done with that cylinder, rotate the crank the opposite way so you can remove the rope and proceed to the next cylinder.

It takes a little longer than using a air line and compressor, but it's much safer in the long run. (Just imagine what would happen if you lost power).

Did a 67 Coronet have an optional rear defrost package?
Posted by: hammond472 - 02-10-13, 07:53 PM - Forum: Tech Q&A - Replies (3)

I was wondering if a 67 coronet had an optional rear defrost package. I have seen these for other B body cars and wondered if anyone here had one on there car. If it is an option with oem parts available for a 67 I would like pix and info if posible. I was looked at the package tray metal this morning and looks to be set up for 3 6x9 speakers but maby the middle is for it? It would be a nice upgrade but I don't want to hack it in if it is not for our car as we are going for a clean stock look.

  Head removal and Inspection
Posted by: Zaq - 02-10-13, 04:41 PM - Forum: Tech Q&A - Replies (13)

Well... I'm tired of fighting with the rear most manifold stud so I took the head off to take it to a machine shop. I HATE admitting defeat almost as much as I hate letting other people do work I feel like I can do (but I obviously can't).

Anyway, I don't know the first thing about engine internals (Okay, maybe the FIRST thing I do know, what things do what) but I don't have a clue what they should look like and what they shouldn't look like. So, after I took it apart I snapped a few shots so you guys can help me out! Lucky you!

Pic 1 and 2: Looks like a lot of carbon buildup on the pistons. Anything to be concerned about? I expected to see some but have no idea what an acceptable amount is.
Pic 3 and 4: This is the head as it sits on the garage floor... the middle "port" seems to be completely blocked by something. It was not this way on the passenger side... this was the most concerning thing that I saw. Should I pop it out and see what it is?
Pic 5: Everything looks fine to me but figured I would post it incase there is something to look for that I am not aware of.

Took the pictures with my Nikon to make sure they were big enough but let me know if there is something else I should be taking a picture of to post and check out. Thanks everyone!

Great recommendation.

Results may vary. My painting skills are dependent on my mood. Usually patience is my prime enemy.
I need to touch this up at some point.

VIN and VON identification 1967 Coronet
Posted by: 1967 R/T - 02-09-13, 09:26 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (27)

I am looking at purchasing a 1967 Coronet R/T and am not failure with Mopar VIN's etc. I know VIN plate on the Driver inner fender well but as I understand there is a VON also and it is stamped on the front radiator support? and driver rear weather strip extension on the or underneath the weather strip?

This car is missing the VIN plate, but has the numbers on the radiator support. I hope I can figure out how to imbed a picture of this here so you can look at.

The owner had purchased this 12 years ago from Utah and had someone do some body and paint on this and the guy removed the plate. The person who is selling this had a real bad experience with this body guy and had to come get his car back. He is now exhausted from all this and 12 years older and just wants to sell the car and move on to riding a bike into retirement.

He said he had traced the VIN plate on paper with a pencil before sending to this body shop and has it in a Chilton's book yet to be found, but he says he will find it.

I researched the title and insurance VIN and it matches the car exactly, but I understand there is a VON that is stamped on the plate and the radiator support and rear weather strip extension.

Is this correct? Please check out this number on the radiator extension and if someone could tell me anything from it I would appreciate it.

I would guess if the VIN and VON were on this traced paper and it matches the title and the radiator support it may be all true.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you,

Chuck

New to the board and building a 67 Coronet 440 with my boys
Posted by: hammond472 - 02-09-13, 01:25 AM - Forum: New Members - Replies (16)

783780784781785782Hello I am Brendan and I am a father of 2 boys Drake age 8 and Charlie age 12. A few weeks ago I sold my BMW and picked up a 67 Coronet for a project to build with my boys. It has a 383 4b engine, 727 auto trans, (was a 4 spd car) 8 3/4 rear end, bench seat. It has a new bright yellow paint job, all new seals and bumpers for the body, new front disc conversion, trans is rebuilt, in the process of redoing the dash. We love the car and will make it our daily driver soon. For now we drive a loaner 85? nissan pile of !@#$. We are looking for parts and to meet cool people who also love Mopars. It is my kids first build and we are making progress fast as I am out of work at the moment. I looked at this site a month ago looking for info. on the 67 before we got it. We are also on the for b bodys only forum. Tonight I was looking on line with my son Drake and he told me to join this site. I already had but had not posted till tonight. Hello to all and Drake says hi and he loves Coronets! Charlie is at his moms for the week but will introduce himself when he gets back Friday. Thanks for looking. Brendan Charlie and Drake
