318 carb rebuild
#1
Howdy guys. I have a 71 coronet with the 318 2bbl. My carb is starting to go bad and i need a rebuild. My ol buddy at napa told me there was many carbs and that i would need the number from the carb and it would probably be a pain to find it. My question is, can i look up my vin or anything to find the carb that they used? thanks a lot guys

That's actually been the way since I started working on cars. Because the same model engine can come with carbs from Carter, Holley, Rochester, they need the number off the side of the carb to look up the correct kit. Also, over the years, the carb may have been swapped out for a different one. VIN won't help them, because back the VIN will only say what engine it has, not the carb it has.

Your buddy is doing you a favor actually. Napa lists 7 carb kits for your car.

http://www.carburetion.com/carbid.htm can give you some help on where to find the carb number.
I love Mopars so much I'm date coding the skid marks in my underwear.

If you can't find a tag with a number on it, take the carb off and clean the outside, it will also be stamped on the casting somewhere. If you have to, bring it in so you can relay numbers to the guy.
