Most old time shops and or car guys have an old 120 lb grease barrel that has been repurposed as a garbage can. These work best. This was from back in the dark ages when cars used to be equipped with grease fittings. Be prepared fo all of the trans oil to come out of the tailshaft!

the way that I`ve always tightened the front band is to loosen the lock nut, finger tighten(I think the spec is 14 inch pounds, can anyone confirm?) it and tighten the lock nut making sure you don't tighten the band any more. the band adjuster if I remember right is just above or close to the fitting of the front trans line on the outside of the trans.

The bands are adjusted by torqueing the adjuster then backing it off a specified # of turns(varies with application), then locking the lock nut. The front band is adjusted externally and the rear is accessed by dropping the pan.
