440 Motor Questions...
#1
HiYa again Folks;
As I have not given up on my search for my old car it has shifted a bit to learning as much as I can about the motor in it.
My 67 Coronet R/T had a dual snorkel chrome air cleaner that read "440 Magnum" on it. Now I have not seen another one like that in pictures but this brought me to a few questions while I was learning about them. I have also seen where someone had a 440 engine for sale but they called it a "Short Block".
The next thing I noticed was that there seems to be quite a few 440's for sale that came out of RV's. I guess my first question is.
(1) What is the difference between a 440 and a 440 Magnum or is there one?
(2) 440 Short Block? is there a Long Block? What would have been in my R/T? Or is this just a dumb question?
(3) If the answers to 1 and 2 are what I think, can a 440 block out of an RV be made into the same motor that went into my R/T (Although I do have this feeling someone is going to tell me it has to do with the heads.)
I haven't gotten my books I want as of yet since I just bought a house and after my new garage is built then I will start collecting the actual items so I don't have to move them twice. Right now I'm just trying to collect knowledge the best I can on the internet.

If anyone has any good links for me to learn about building my own 440 please let me know.

And Thanks Again Smile

"Short Block" Is a way someone is describing an engine. Meaning they have the block, crank, rods, and pistons.
"Long Block would be the same but with the cyl. heads, and sometimes the intake.
I will let someone else tell you the difference between 440/440magnum/hp engines. (I don't think there is a difference in the "Blocks") just the heads and cam (connecting rods are heavy duty on six pack engines. ) But as far as nickel content in blocks that's for someone who knows more than I.
Good Luck
Danny

Thanks Mike. Great info. I have heard that "Thin wall" crap for years, and never thought much about it. Since I have a .030 over 1976 block in my car since 1996 with street and strip use.
