1969 Coronet 500 Tire Size
#1
Hi good folks !

I am restoring a 1969 Coronet 500 H code 3.23 SG / 727 and wonder what you think of me using 225/70/15 Cooper tires (since they are T rated ) in front and 235/70/15 in the rear on 7" wide 15" Rims, either I will use Magnum 500's or maybe Radir Tririb III ( http://www.radirwheels.com/wheels.htm )

My aim is to have a large wheel diameter but how is the grip in corners ?

I will be doing something to the engine, like 906 heads/Roadrunner cam and a nice exhaust system to enhance power but try to keep it stock looking and keep all original parts.

The car will eventually go on a trip to Europe and do a little cruisinig and no-speed-limit driving on the Autobahn south in Germany plus some nice Bavarian Alp tarmac.

Comments ? Thank you very much in advance

Erik

you will be fine with those tires/wheels, if your motor is original it should already have 906 heads on it, if they are good then a cam and dual exhaust with 69 hp exhaust manifolds will make it more fun to drive

Thank you AzA12Bee,

What a stunning T5 convertible you have ! I read about it being 1 number away from the red one. Amazing, and love those rims ! I hope you decide to post some pictures of your beauty.

I have always been a bit confused about 330HP vs 335HP engines. The 335HP engines have 906 heads and the 440 magnum cam in it don't they? And were they really Roadrunner exclusive or did Superbee's get them too ? I do seem to think that both engines had the same coding ; H code. But is the only difference the cam then ?? It would seem so if 906 heads are also on the 330 HP engines. Suits me very nicely actually ! I actually dont know if the exhaust manifolds are HP ones or not but I imagine they should be, car came stock with dual exhaust I suppose or is there any specific code for that ?

Thanks again for the info Smile I tried to upload a sheet with codes from my car but I dont know if its readable. ( It is but you have to download it to your pc I think then its readable )

Super Bee's most definately also had the 335 HP Magnum "H" engines. My info says that the 383 Magnum engine has an unsilenced air cleaner, a special high-lift, high-performance camshaft, windage tray, and dual exhausts.

I also believe the HP exhaust manifolds were a standard part of that "dual exhausts".

Looking quickly at your code sheet, I did notice an error. You show it as having a build date of B05 and then interpreting that as Oct 5th, 1969. B05 would really be November 5th, 1968 as the model years are from August 1968 to July 1969, then a plant shutdown for a couple weeks for the new model change over on the assembly lines.

My car has a build date of Nov 13th, so about 8 days after yours was built at the Lynch Road assembly plant. Your VIN is about 5,160 cars earlier than mine as well.

Thanks, is, I will post more pics of the 500 convertible as I put it together..

the H in 1969 was a 383 4 barrel, in the Super a Bee and Road Runner it was the 335 hp motor unless the car had a/c then it got the 330 hp motor. The 335 was painted orange and had HP stamped on the motor. The 330 was not stamped HP and was painted blue.

My 500 should be a blue painted 383 but I can't put a blue motor in a copper brown car so it's getting orange, it's not correct but I don't care

The 383 RR and Super Bee motors had 440 parts put on and in them, cam, exhaust manifolds, heads, etc.

Yep Steve, I agree with you. I think the confusing part is that there were 3 different versions of the 383 but only two different VIN engine codes. A two barrel version (G VIN code, E61 fender tag code), and two versions of the 4 barrel engines, each of which was coded as an "H" VIN code and both were coded E63 on the fender tag. So, if you have an "H" engine coded VIN it still doesn't tell you for sure which 4 barrel version of the 383 you have. We know the "H" code RR's and Super Bee's all had the "Magnum 335 hp" version engine with the 906 heads, cam from the 440, HP exhaust manifolds, etc. Plus, these engines would be stamped "HP" on the engine ID pad.

But the OP stated his car was an "H" VIN code 383 that is in a Coronet 500. So the question is, does he have the 335 hp version (orange engine), or the 330 hp version? (I think turquoise engine??)

I'll bet it is the 330 hp engine in his car. I think the only visual clues between these two engines is the stampings on the engine ID pad and of course the engine color. What do you think?

The 69 Charger we had was a 383, but it was a 330 HP, No 440 goodies, I didn't quite understand that, only 5 HP difference between motors?
