But the part numbers show it to me even more. Course this is in my mind, and you really don't want to be in my mind. Mikes' is worse, but I think I come a close second.

Richard, both lines of B-bodies have the same or at least similar hood bracing. They hood bracing will be different part numbers (if it is even separated), but the same molded hood pads fits both.

I can get pictures if you'd like.

Ok my friend, since we're just having some fun here, this Coronet convertible is being advertised as a "survivor car" with only 5600 miles on the clock and it doesn't have a moulded silencer pad, so I'd have to doubt that any of the other 1966 cars did. As far as the different model lines having different part numbers for this pad, that would make sense because of the different shapes and sizes of hoods on each model line. Maybe in later model years Chrysler made changes to improve the lifespan of these pads and they became moulded? I'll check the 1967 through 1970 model year factory parts books and see if any are listed as being moulded.

I just checked all of the factory parts books from 1967 through 1974 and none of the silencer pads are listed as being moulded, but factory parts books are well known for giving very short and not very ,descriptive definitions for parts, so no concrete answers there. Maybe Rich can show us pictures of 1966 and 1967 "survivor cars" with moulded silencer pads? Different assembly plants also used different parts suppliers also, so that could come into play as well.

Could it be possible that Chrysler used more than one supplier for the hood pads? Maybe one company moulded them and the other did not or they changed suppliers mid-year? Maybe the early cars had flat and the late cars had moulded or vise versa? Or maybe it depended on whether the cat was built in Los Angeles or Detroit? What do you think guys?

See, that's a very good possibillity, but everyone that I have seen that was original to the car WASN"T molded and after a while, those things would just fall apart and get down in the engine bay.

It doesn't make much sense to me that Chrysler would have spent the money to have specific moulded silencer pads made for each different car line when they could use the flat material for all of the various cars and simply die cut the material to fit each car. I can't say for sure, but I'd bet that the aftermarket parts suppliers offer the moulded pads because of what Steve mentioned, that the original flat material didn't hold up very well for very long and makes a mess in the engine compartment when it starts to fail.

It would be great if someone could provide pictures or documentation of original factory moulded silencer pads and what if any model years they were used.

My argument that the factory used molded hood pads is that no one would have replaced a non molded hood pad with a molded one when the cars were in service. Most originals were destroyed early in their life and either ripped off (most) or replaced with what ever was available at the time. The picture I posted was of a clearly original pad on an unrestored vehicle. The pad looks to be in the same condition as the rest of the engine bay. At least it has been on there long enough that it is clearly not one of those newer offered repro molded ones.

Anything is possible from the factory to keep production going/location/vendor.

I've never seen an old, tired non molded hood pad. Has anyone?
