I may have been doing this wrong..which side do the foams go on..axle housing to backing plate (back)or bearing retainer to backing plate(front)

Checked the factory service manual. They call them gaskets and it does show one on both sides. I would post a pic but I think that's against site rules........

This is what I bought ...i always put the foams on the back part of the backing plate..but took apart my mostly factory rear and found the paper gaskets there instead

I'm not sure it matters. Also the FSM doesn't specify which, it just says gaskets. I went through this with my blue car last year. Notice that the black ones have an inside ridge. See if that lines up with anything. You might find that the ridge only lines up with one side.

Very interesting is that the instructions for a Dana are different and only shows one gasket for a Dana:

And parts book only shows one gasket:
