I may have been doing this wrong..which side do the foams go on..axle housing to backing plate (back)or bearing retainer to backing plate(front)
I may be wrong, but thought it was on both sides.............
Checked the factory service manual. They call them gaskets and it does show one on both sides. I would post a pic but I think that's against site rules........
You can post pictures..we dont make money from any of this
This is what I bought ...i always put the foams on the back part of the backing plate..but took apart my mostly factory rear and found the paper gaskets there instead
I'm not sure it matters. Also the FSM doesn't specify which, it just says gaskets. I went through this with my blue car last year. Notice that the black ones have an inside ridge. See if that lines up with anything. You might find that the ridge only lines up with one side.

Instructions for an 8 3/4 from FSM:

11896

Very interesting is that the instructions for a Dana are different and only shows one gasket for a Dana:

11897

And parts book only shows one gasket:

11898
But parts book shows 2 gaskets for a Dana:

11899

And parts book only shows one type of gasket:

11900

This is all from 67 FSM and 67 parts book.
To complicate it even more, 70 FSM 8 3/4 installation is different:
