8 & 3/4 Experts wanted!
#1
Hey guys.. i had an odd issue and i wanted to see if anyone here had some insight.. My 66 coronet has a 8 3/4 rear end.. my Drivers side wheel seal keeps leaking and i dont understand how or why.. first off i made the swap to green bearings a few years back and they have been flawless and very good...in 2013 before i put the car away for winter the same drivers wheel seal started leaking diff fluid.. i found it odd because of the o rings in the green bearings.. so i replaced the inner wheel seal... 2014 went by fine drove a lot and even drove it to carlisle.. i go out today to just start it up.. and that wheel is leaking diff fluid again..how is it possible with a good fairly new seal in there and an o ring on the green bearing?

Check the surface the seal rides on. Also oil could be leaking between the outer metal part of the seal and the bore it is pressed into. I always put a little smear of silicone on the outside of a seal before it goes in.

Ive also heard that it could be that the vent is clogged.. and if it is the seal ill probably do the silicone.. i dont think its the actual axle being worn it didnt look bad at all last year and it only started leaking very recently because a month ago when i started it wasnt leaking

Agree on the vent being a possibility. Couple more questions:

- what viscosity fluid are you using?
- How much fluid are you putting in?

Pull the axle and inspect the axle surface very carefully where the seal should be rubbing. Make sure there is evidence the seal is touching the axle and that the seal surface is in good condition.

It is possible that you could have damaged the seal when you installed the axle. Take a flashlight and inspect the seal carefully while still in the housing to make sure everything looks okay with it once you pull the axle out.

I'll be honest haha..It's the same fluid that was in there when I got it 3 years ago and I don't drive it too too much.. It doesn't look dirty and I didn't add any last time because I could touch the fluid with my pinky with the plug out.. And it was still in the axle tubes a bit.. What weight should it be?? And I will look at the axle when I start working on it sometime mid week and possibly take pics for you guys. Thanks for the answers so far
