That is a FANTASTIC looking truck Bill! Cool to hear that it will be staying in the family and I know that you'll take excellent care of it! Your Dad did some wonderful work on that beauty!

For some unknown reason, nobody seems to take me seriously............
flathead 6. Don't know why the coil is upside down?

The coil ISN'T upside down, that's the way they were mounted at the factory. Nice truck you have, something to hang on to and enjoy. I learned to drive in my father's '49 Dodge truck, almost identical to yours back when I was about 10 yrs old. Wish I still had it, but he traded it years ago for a newer truck. Looks like that one has been converted to 12V system. They were originally 6 volt system, at least in '49.
drums are probably crusty I haven't pulled anything yet.
Dad converted it to 12 volt back in the 80's.
I didn't know a coil was ever upside down on purpose (thanks for the info). MSD blaster coils specifically say don't mount upside down so I Was projecting that knowledge back a few years.
Here's a photo of a '53 that looks VERY close to factory original, at least as far as I can remember how they looked back in the day. We're talking about 55-60 years of my old memories, so I could be wrong of course.
