Back in the 80's and 90's there was a guy here in the Phoenix area that had a 1966 Mustang 2 door hardtop that he had put a front straight axle on along with a jacked up rear suspension. That car was so squirrelly going down the quarter mile that I use to do everything possible to NOT have to race him! He never beat me when we did race though! LOL!

Many of the Gassers and early AFX race cars that I remember running back in the 60's and 70's did not jack up the rear suspension nearly as much as this Road Runner. Maybe my memory isn't as good as it use to be, but other than saving weight with the front straight axles, wasn't the idea to raise the front suspension to help with weight transfer while launching the car from the starting line?

He's really wrinkling up those slicks isn't he Andy? I hate to admit this here, but I've always really liked the 1955 and 1957 shoebox Chevys.

My first car was a '55 4-door 6-cylinder, 3 on the column. Sold it to guy in town later and he welded the back doors up and tried converting it to a 2-door with a 396 4-speed....needless to say the end result was a disaster and it got crushed.

Yeah, that was my understanding of the principle too. Seems raising the rear at the same time would negate any benefit gained with the high nose and would be for "looks" only??

I agree with you regarding raising the rear suspension when using a front straight axle. Just doesn't make sense as you would negate the weight transfer with the raised front suspension. This Road Runner looks more like a 4 wheel drive without the benefits of having 4 wheel drive.

Regarding the vintage pictures. Just SO many fantastic race cars of all makes from the 60's and 70's! We should start a specific thread that features those cars!

if I owned it I`d lock the hubs in and go muddin'! IMO it sits way to high for a gasser. its a good thing it has the original 383 so the value is still there.
