The steering box I picked up at Carlisle ain't what it appears to be.
The tag for it says it came off a 68 R/T. It's got the small sector pitman shaft, so it's definetely a pre-'72 box. However, the worm gear shaft is .630 in size. A stock Mopar one is .716.
Casting number on the side is D2267262. Control valve has 16231 and L-65 on it.
Anyone ever see one like that before? Just curious as to what he heck it fit.

I believe that the steering box casting number 2267 262 was used from 1962 through 1972 for A, B and E-Body cars and maybe the L65 you mentioned is actually 1-65 which means that it was cast in 1965 and possibly was originally installed on a 1966 model? The reason that I mention this, is because I read somewhere where casting number G2267 262 with 1-68 on the steering box was cast in 1968 and installed on a 1969 Coronet R/T, so if you went backwards from G to D, that would make your box cast in 1965 and possibly installed on a 1966 model? I'll check my 1966 Factory Service Manual and see what the specs are for the 1966 boxes, as the Factory Parts Books won't help us in this case.

Sorry Mike, I've checked out the steering box specifications in my 1966 Factory Service Manual and no specifications are given for the worm gear shaft size, nor is that information given in any of my other reference books. You may end up having to call some of the companies that specialize in those parts to find an answer.

First off, the casting number. It's not D2267262, it's G2267262. This comes out to a 68-72 box for B and E bodies.
Found the build date on it. (if interested, it's stamped below the control valve on the left side). Mine is 1318. This means it was built on May 10, 1968
Cleaned the control valve up some more. the number is actually 1823146. This comes out to a control valve for a 68/9 model year. Not sure what the L-65 is for.
The small worm sector? That's normal for a power steering car, manuals are much larger. The plunge casing in the pic came off a manual box I had gotten years ago as a core. I measured the worm shaft on the manual box that is currently in the car.
That was fun....
Thanks for the help!
I love Mopars so much I'm date coding the skid marks in my underwear.
Worm gear shaft size: All pictures I saw of a PS box showed the small shaft size. Looked at the PS/Manual adapter ad there it was plain as could be. Firm Feel: http://firmfeel.com/b_body_mopar_column_adapter.html

Some great info there, thanks Mike.
Never seen that before.
