Todd. I have some basic questions. When did this start? Was the car ever modified electrically? You need to look at the basics first. Good connections and grounds are everything. The VR you are using? The small silver guy with a prong with a thread hole and a prong on the other side? Or the late flat pack triangle connector style?

In a perfect world you shouldn't fry a VR. Unless you are getting a spike voltage condition due to poor connection or bad ground. I'm concerned that the car was messed with and the VR was wired backwards. The field is connected to the ignition side and the ignition is connected to the field side. But that's just a guess on my part.

The next thing to look at before you start pealing off miles of black tape. Is to get measurements. Get a buddy with a volt meter. At idle. Your battery voltage should be the same as the key side of the ballast. As well as the blue VR wire connection.
