My column shift is out of sync
#1
Hi guys. I have a '65 Coronet with the 318 and a 727 torqueflite. It's a column shift. The transmission will only shift into 3rd gear if I move the shifter over to neutral. If I leave it in drive it will stay in second gear. And to get reverse, I have to go past R to P, then back again for it to engage. It works but it's not right and I'd like to dial it in. I have a manual and it has a gear shift cable adjustment, which I attempted but it made no difference. It goes through the gears nicely, but it's just not lined up on the steering column. It doesn't mention any adjustment at the steering column, so I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem?

There probably are not too many on this board that are familiar with the cable shift. You may consider posting the question on Moparts.

I looked into it more the other day. I fired it up and drove it to make sure it was warmed up. Definitely wouldn't drop into 3rd unless I put the column shift to N instead of D. Brought it home, after reading in the manual about other things that could be adjusted and looking at the throttle link adjustment, I adjusted it slightly and went for another drive. It seemed much the same but whilst in D once I was up to speed and let off the the gas, I felt it then drop into 3rd. I went back home and adjusted a little more and when driving up to speed, not too heavy on the gas, but gradual, it went into 3rd. And this seemed to be a consistent thing. I was content enough to know that it's now getting into the gear and maybe if I adjusted a little more it would be more obvious of getting third. I know it used to go into 3rd when I'd have the foot down harder. But I feel it's not the cable now as much as getting that throttle linkage adjusted.
