Transmission swap question
#1
I want some opinions... Smile

My car right now is original engine and trans....my 727 is about done..slips a lot and such.. its on the column
i was thinking about swapping in a 3 speed on the column (manual is fun Tongue) so i dont have to cut a hole in the floor... what all is involved with this.. id keep the 727 in the garage so i can turn it back original if i so wish...or do you think i should just get the 727 rebuilt?

To do the trans swap you mentioned, you'd have to find a 3/tree column out of a 66 (67's won't fit), as well as all the shift linkages. These aren't re-popped, so you'd have to find a donor car. Then you'd have to get a pedal assembly, clutch rod, z-bar, z-bar frame mount, bellhousing, clutch fork, pilot bearing, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and trans.

If you want to drive the car, I'd say get the 727 rebuilt.
I love Mopars so much I'm date coding the skid marks in my underwear.

X2

have you ever driven a 3 on the tree car? my coronet used to be a 3 speed, I hated driving it with that shifter on the column.

Plus first gear is not syncronized. Good luck finding a 3 speed that doesn't have broken teeth. Jamie Passon rebuilt my 65 Fury 3 speed manual tranny and I got like $1600 in it. However it did receive lots of NOS parts - remember the broken teeth issue????

Don't know where in Ohio you are, but Jeff Russell in Liberty Indiana would be a great choice to rebuild the 727. Very good and don't believe you will find anyone that will beat his price.

TCI street and strip is less than $1000 from JEGS with warrenty.

I got somewhere around that in the transmission Jeff Russell built for my daughter's car. Might have been a tick more, however, that included a steel billet drum! The drum alone is somewhere around $600 and the price included a new valve body.

For safety's sake, I strongly recommend the steel drum upgrade,

I have the TCI in a little over 3 years and it works great. Nice solid shifts when driving normal and tire spinning shifts at wide open.

But does it have a steel drum or a grenade in waiting?
