Trunk Spatter Question
#1
Howdy All,

I am planning (best laid plans....) to do my trunk pan before I put her up for our lovely New England winter. The mat is torn so I've ordered another. I figure I'll go ahead and vacuum, wire brush, vacuum, clean, rustproof spray and then the spatter spray - then cover up all my hard work with the new trunk mat ;-)

Questions are: Anybody done this, any gotcha's? (seems pretty straightforward). Any suggestions on brands and colors of spatter (I kinda just like saying spatter, btw)? # of cans of rustproofing and spatter spray? My math works out to about 4 cans, sound about right?

As always thank you for any thoughts and I'll post pix once I get started.

Bill

I've never spatter painted a trunk but I've painted a few while painting the entire car. There's nothing I can think of that makes it different tthan painting any other part of the car. It's all in the prep work.

Not sure what they painted the trunks with in 65 or if they spatter painted them at all, but I think all you need will be 2 cans. Get gray self etching primer and a similar gray spatter and it will go a lot farther than you think.

If you are looking for originality then just paint it the same color as the car. Chryslers didn't use that paint on trunks or floors.
On the inside of the quarters they used more like a deadening undercoating that is them sprayed body color. But if you are just looking
for something quick to clean it up then that spatter spray can stuff would work. Like Rich said make sure you use some etching primer first. Good luck!

I know for sure that my 65 Fury was factory original with spatter paint in the trunk floor and quarter panel sides. 80% sure my Mom's 65 Belvedere trunk was also factory spatter paint.

Sorry I shouldn't assume that the early 60's were like 68 up to 70 coronets! And I might be thinking of the spatter paint that all people use like this. I'm pretty sure Ive never seen a mopar with this, I could be wrong though. My wife tells me I am all the time.7185]7186]

I think 65 might have been the cut off year for spatter paint. Some had it some did not. My 65 has grey spatter paint.

My 65 Coronet had factory spatter paint, as did a 65 Coronet parts car I just picked up.
