Road Wheels (Magnum 500) dealer installed option in 1966???
#1
Good day Everybody :-)

Like the Title says....

Was Road Wheels (some says Magnum 500) a dealer "installed" option in 1966???

Some Mopar fans says Magnum in videos and so on...

But the correct name are Road Wheels - or??

Have a good one..

Hello Anders,

No sir, the Magnum 500 wheels were not an option on the 1966 Coronet models. They made their first appearance on the 1967 Coronets.

Ford actually used the Magnum 500 wheels first on their Mustangs and other cars.

And the Chrysler Magnum 500 wheel.

Want to know how to tell a Ford wheel from one made for Chrysler?

The painted ones have a smaller opening for the front bearing hub to stick thru on the Ford. While it will fit a Chrysler, it becomes almost a "press fit" when tightening down the lug nuts.

Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but "road wheels" are painted silver, and "Magnum 500" are chrome
I love Mopars so much I'm date coding the skid marks in my underwear.

Oki... So the hottest thing for the 500 in 66 was the (for me..;-)) not so hot wheel covers ..?

Im born in 1970...

But what rims should a cool dude have for wheels in 66 then??? Cragers...??? hit me with examples...

I ran Styled Steel Wheels on my 68...8045] Notice the thin Accent Pin Stripe..;-) - sold this car after 20 years of ownership - felt strange..

Richard - I also like the 65-68 Stangs - very much.. but now a Coronet era has begun...i'll try this for a while...:-)

Regards
Anders

The Magnum 500 wheels both Chrysler and Ford are chromed and do not use a separate trim ring. The Chrysler Road Wheels are painted and do use separate trim rings. Neither the Magnum 500 or the Road Wheels were an factory option for the 66 Coronets, but factory option or not, they do look fantastic on the 1966 Coronets!

If you do want to go with a cool 1960's period looking wheel, you can't go wrong with a set of the Cragar SS mags. I'm thinking of replacing the Weld Draglite wheels I have on my 66 Coronet 500 with a set of the Cragars as well someday.

Another great looking mag wheel from the 60's and 70's is the Keystone Klassic. I'm not sure if they are still being sold new, but I'm sure that someone here on the DCR knows.

Anders,

I'm not supposed to post information directly from the Chrysler Factory Parts Books due to copyright issues, but I wanted to show you what all of the factory options were for all of the 1966 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth models. Not many wheel and wheel cover options for Coronets in 1966.

Agreed Mike, as the Black 66 500 Hemi hardtop and the Red 66 500 convertible above with the chrome Magnum 500's look fantastic, but then again, that Yellow 66 440 with the Cragar SS mags looks equally killer! Decisions, decisions! Big Grin

Shoot, how about a pair of the Magnum 500's on one side of the car and a pair of the Cragar SS mags on the other side of the car! Rofl Rofl
