Fixing to start replacing floor pans and have some rot on crossmember. Wanted some opinions on whether a repair cap would work or not. The rest of the crossmember seems to be in decent shape.
If the car is nice definitely not. I am good with metal and would much rather patch crossmember rust damage if possible - some are just too far gone in which case I would look for an original replacement or aftermarket if they were available. The caps are a bandaid in my opinion but there are some applications where it could make sense. I personally would never do it.
I've put a set of Saf-T-Caps on a car. When properly installed, they'll outlast the rest of the car. Like any repair, there are limitations to them. The big one is the caps need metal to weld on to, and the passenger side is missing the section that would connect the cap to the rocker panel of the car. Driver side is not much better, by the time you ground the rust down to good metal, there may not be much to weld to.
How are the rocker panels where the crossmember attaches to it?
I love Mopars so much I'm date coding the skid marks in my underwear.
The rockers are in pretty good shape. The more I debate it, the more I'm leaning on replacing the whole crossmember, since I will be doing the floor anyway. Now is the perfect time and it will only be better in the long run.
