#1
I'm looking at installing a Power Master Mini Starter #9533 and a New set of header's anybody have a suggestion for a good set of header's with no clearance issue's; keep in mind it's a 4-speed car so there's a lot of obstacles on the driver's side Thank's in advance; Ron

I have a Power master #9533; Installed when it when I converted back original 4-speed; had to heat and manipulate one of my header tubes for clearance; well last weekend my battery cable came in contact with header tube; Now I have a bad cable, Hole in header Tube; Sooo,I don't want that problem again, Already Made new batt/solenoid cable; I'm lookin for something that i don't have to modify; will most likely replace starter and header's; Good excuse for a new exhaust system as well.

Hello Ron,

If you REALLY want a good exhaust system that won't require ANY modifications to the car and very little modifications to the exhaust system, go purchase yourself a set of the reproduction 1968-1969 factory big block high performance cast iron exhaust manifolds and say goodbye to all of the problems that headers will cause you. My '66 Coronet 500 with a fairly mild 440, a set of the original 1969 H.P. cast iron exhaust manifolds and a free flowing 3" exhaust system has run high 12 second quarter mile passes in the cooler air in California and ran low 13 second quarter mile passes all day long in the hot weather here in Phoenix and it sounds just as good as a similar equipped car with headers.

A couple of older pictures of my '66 Coronet 500's engine compartment that show the clearance between the inner fender sheet metal and the H.P. exhaust manifolds on both sides of the engine compartment. These manifolds also don't care if you're running a 4 speed or an automatic transmission either, as these manifolds will clear all of the front suspension, steering and transmission parts just as Chrysler designed them to do.

Hi Richard

I've got a 68 R/T with a 440 and have been considering headers. People have told me that I will have clearance issues with P/S and then I read your post. Where would I source these HP manifolds? Thanks

You should already have them. An RT came stock with them.

Many of the Mopar parts suppliers sell either original used HP exhaust manifolds, or complete new reproduction HP exhaust manifold kits. It REALLY is important to shop around though, as there are MUCH better prices for these manifolds at some retailers than others as you can see below in just the three companies I've posted below. These HP manifolds are not all that big, but they are fairly heavy, so shipping costs to your location should be looked into carefully as well.

Once again, if anybody is building a full fledged race car, then run a good set of headers, but for anybody else who is driving their cars on the street most of the time with occasional trips to the drag strip, or runs their cars in the street legal classes like I did with my Coronet, then run the HP manifolds. They will fit without any issues no matter what options your car may have and they won't cause any clearance issues with starters, front suspension parts, steering parts, or 4 speed, or automatic transmission linkage. My '66 Coronet 500 has power steering, power brakes, a full manual automatic transmission and is also a factory a/c car and my HP manifolds have no issues with any of those options. (I removed all of the factory a/c equipment for drag racing, but it was all in place when I installed the HP manifolds on the 383 and then the 400 engines I had in the car before I did the swap to my current 440)
