PERTRONIX TIME!
#1
Ok, so I decided to treat the old Poly to pointless ignition. Kit arrived today & it looks like a piece of cake to install.....but, before I rip into it, I thought I'd ask if anyone out there has used one of these & how the install went. Also, the instructions indicate that I can bypass (eliminate) the ballast resistor.... or not(?). What's the concensus on that? Anyone installed the kit and eliminated the ballast?

As always, your feedback is much appreciated.

Some ignition systems need full battery voltage to run correctly. Removing the ballast would give full battery voltage. Ignition systems that use a ballast is too reduced voltages through the points. Also preservs the life of the old oil filled canister coils.

thats what I understand.. I could be wrong.
follow the instructions to the letter and call the tech line if needed.

Installed one back in 1999 and haven't touched it since....that's a good thing. No I did not bypass the ballast.

I am running the Ignitor III and Flamethrower III in my 383. My Ballast is bypassed (at the moment OUTSIDE of the ballast) But I am going to wire it THROUGH the ballast on the firewall and bypass it behind. Just so it looks stock again.

Good thought, Tekhouse, I had a buddy suggest the same thing. Bridging the resistor behind would be a lot easier than digging in to the harness. Cool!

I've installed a couple and they worked fine. You don't have to dig into the harness, just wire the unit to the hot terminal of the ballast resistor.
