THE FLOWMASTER DRONE
#1
My '66 Poly has a dual exhaust setup with flowmasters and full tail pipes. Up to 50 mph, the "drone" coming through the interior is very loud, once I hit the magic 50 mark, it pretty much disappears. Last week, I had a balance pipe fitted which makes almost no difference. The system is properly mounted with rubber insulators on the hangers. The car still has the optional factory undercoat intact too. I'm still trying to find a way to calm down the drone - the car sounds great from the outside. I was considering header wrap around the mufflers as a last resort since they're like new & I really don't want to change them. Anybody out there have any ideas?

I don't think the wrap will fix your problem. Being a Poly I doubt you have 3inch pipes or anything so I bet its your mufflers. Sometimes just a simple different tip can fix it though, you might test that area first.

I have a similar problem now since new engine went in, thinking about changing mufflers also, and I went from headers to manifolds but bigger heads and cam. It does sound sweet outside though Smile

I know the FlowMaster drone all to well. But I have the 3in. 2 chamber mufflers with dumps (no tail pipes). With that being said, I've been told the 3 chamber will help but not cure it. I hate to say it, but you may have to get away from the FlowMaster altogether if it really bugs you.

Headers would help, believe it or not.

is that what the flowmaster model # means? 40`s drone until 40 mph and the 50`s drone up to 50mph? huh now I know.

I would swap them out for a straight through muffler like dynomax ultraflows, pypes racepro, or magnaflows.

Thanks, guys. You're pretty much confirming what I thought. Think I'll "live with it" for a while. Another month and the car will be put up for the Winter anyway (sob...), so I'll rethink it in the Spring.

What balance pipe you got fitted? I'm a newbie but hear that the X crossover pipes are better than the H pipes if that is any help?

I think you're right. I had a local muffler shop make up a straight "H" bridge & weld it in.
