What was in your Trunk in 1969??
#1
Car in question is a '69 Super Bee. It came with F70 white stripe Polyglas tires mounted on Road Wheels when it was delivered from the factory.

What I want to know is, what did they put in the trunk for the spare tire? I know the wheel was the basic black 14" steel wheel, but what TIRE did they put in there? Was it a match to what was on the ground? Or was it just a common blackwall? And would it also have been an F70 or a different size for the spare?

I want to find something relatively "close appearing" to the original but it will have to be in a 15" size. Also, I don't want a Polyglas for a spare, it will have to be a modern radial design for safety. Anybody have any ideas?

Thank you for your help.

My 69 Hemi Bee had a 14" raised white letter good year polly glas tire on a black rim as a spare. The car came with F70 15" white walls!

Interesting. Your Bee had 15's from the factory, but the spare was still a 14" and DID NOT match the other four on the road. Of course, it was a Hemi car so maybe that was part of the reason for this. Probably front discs on that Hemi??

Mine of course is just a run of the mill 383 car and came with 14's all around with the F70 white stripe tires. 4 wheel drums on my car. Just trying to figure out what the SPARE should look like??

Anyone else have any info?????? Thanks Joe Mama!!

Is there anything left on the inside of the trunk lid? They marked the lid with what the spare was.

Not quite the same, but my new '68 Runner came with a matching Good Year F70- 14 red line tire in the trunk.

To my recollection there never was a marking on the deck lid with the tire size on my car, just the jack instruction sticker. Did they mark them at ALL plants? I don't think they did, but not positive. Mine was a Lynch Road car.

Thanks for the reply!!

Harold, this is good information. This is what I'm trying to determine, if the spare matched the rubber on the road. In your case it did. So maybe my spare SHOULD be the F70 white line tire??

Thanks for your reply and input!!

One more question though, are you sure it was a GOODYEAR and not a FIRESTONE?? I thought the red lines were all made by Firestone? Maybe I'm wrong on that though?

My 68 RR I bought new wasn't ordered with any wheels, just steel wheels and hubcaps, yup, all redlines and wheels were body color, same for the spare. I believe, if you ordered the road wheels, the spare was a steel wheel painted black.

Thanks Steve, some more good info here.

Yes, mine came with the road wheels and the white line F70's. Also the spare wheel was the plain stamped steel black painted wheel, just as you have indicated. So from what you've said, my spare TIRE should also be a white line F70.

What with your car and Harold's car, it's starting to sound like the spare TIRE should match the other 4 tires regardless of the wheel type. Hemi cars may be the exception to this rule???

Excellent info, starting to see a trend here. Anyone else have any insight on this?

Thanks again Steve for the reply. Appreciate it.

My '68 was like Racer Brown's - body coloured steel rims & poverty caps. The tires were definitely Good Years. Funny thing was that Canadian Tire, up here, sold the exact same tires with their own "Motomaster" brand - red lines & all made by Good Year. When I went to Chrome reveresed rims (remember those days?) with the original red lines, I just had to buy one more tire from CTC to go with the spare when I put snow tires on the back.
