Maybe someone can help me out with this... The block on my 383 has a casting number 2468130 which I know is correct for a 383. Directly under the casting number are the letters 'LL'. I can't find any reference to 'LL' anywhere about the meaning. The block is dated 3-13-68 and it shows what I think is the shift that built the engine. That shows as D< N (ten dot circle pointing to position eight). Just curiosity but does anyone know what the 'LL' means? I've seen reference to "L" and "LC" for low compression.

I recently got some info that someone knew of a similar marking "12 LL" which signified that there was a mold modification. That's the only info I have found.

i wouldn't think the LL would be of too much importance. you would be able to see the important #'s while standing on the passenger side of the block looking at the distributor. directly below the distributor on the head mounting surface there will be #'s and letters stamped.

I agree because there isn't much info them. I checked all the other numbers many years ago but the curiosity finally got to me about that 'LL'.

Could be, I suppose. I've seen pics of blocks with 'RL' on them in the same place. It's probably something simple like 'left line' or 'right line'. Like you said. it's probably nothing significant and not worth pursuing. It's really just curiosity. On my engine, the pad by the distributor is marked 'D383' and underneath that is '3 26 2'. That date matches with the serial number on the engine (not the vin # by the oil pressure sending unit, but the one under the starter). The serial number is PT383H24331907. So the engine was built in the Trenton plant and, using the 10000 day Julian calender, the 2433 means March 26. On the Allpar site, they have a nice article on the Trenton plant but it's mostly about newer engines. No big deal but thanks a lot for answering.
