I recently read a couple of articles that talked about dyno testing a 318 that put out over 400hp. Was wondering if any of you guys have done this or have read about it. Basicly they punched out .40 over, put on 360 smog heads, did some mild porting, put on the rpm airgap intake, a 1" tapered spacer, headers, cam, flat top pistons, a good tuned 650 cfm carb, and decked it to a 0 deck height. Their best runs went to 412hp @ 6300 rpm, and I don't remember what torque. Sounds to good to be true, but if not, it sounds like a good deal to me. If anybody wants to read about it, I will post the link. What do you think?

I think its quite possible. there was one built a few years ago with #302 heads that made over 400hp by HOTROD magazine I think. I like 318`s, I just bought one out of an 85 fifth ave. w/ 57,000 miles on it. I plan on reringing it and putting a bigger roller cam in it. I have another one that's going in my 47 Desoto also an 85 roller cam motor but it has magnum heads and 1.6 chevy roller rockers(yes they fit right on with no mods, only need studs, guide plates and hardened pushrods)

Are you talking LA318 or pre 67?
the 62 318 with four bbl option came stock with 265hp. I just built up my A318 and without removing the heads, and only doing a basic top end refresh, I'm about 300 hp. 400 should be and is totally doable. Particularly with a head swap. I have a dyno readout, of a a318 stroked out to a 402 producing nearly 420 hp. An la 318 has to be able to get to 400 pretty easily. Well, easily in the scheme of things.

My 318 is in a 67, 2 bbl originally though I couldn't confirm that, had a shiny new 4 barrel on it when I got it.
