6v pos grd?

i guess most of you in this 49/50 forum are familier with the theory of these cars,but seems little confusing to me. electricity goes in a circle in ac hot to neutral to grd.On the pos. grd is everthing operating off a charge to body or off neg wiring .i need to check blower and wiper motor and fuel gauge not working , thanks for any help

You have electric wipers? My fuel gauge doesn't work either, I think it's the sending unit though.

In DC the electrons move from negative to positive. That is read as amps. The voltage or pressure is measured in the opposite direction. The motors on our cars have permanent magnets and do not care about polarity so it doesn't matter which way the car is wired. The fuel gauge does not operate on voltage so to say, it measures a resistance signal by the variable resistor in the fuel tank. Yes if you go 12 volt on that circuit it will have to have a voltage reducer installed but it is not voltage that the gauge reads. according to the book it has elec motor.it also said to check wire from fuel pump to gauge to be sure recieiving volts. i was told the guy i bought it from started it with 12v system so it might have fried couple things.weather has been bad down here waiting for better before getting into

so.... say as for as the radio ,the "power source" is from being connected to the frame.if i want to put a inline fuse i would trace a wire back to the frame from it? and the wires at ignition switch should it be 6v i think i read somewhere a wire comes off it to fuel guage

Yes the electric windshield wiper motor is supplied from the fuel gauge. There is also an 8 amp circuit breaker between the fuel gauge and the wiper switch. In addition to the wipers there is the feed from the ignition switch and to the heater and the defroster switches. If the previous owner operated the car at 12 volts for very long there may be a whole bunch wrong.

If you want to put a modern 12 volt negative ground radio into your car there are a couple of choices. You must either change the car's voltage to 12 volts negative ground (modern radio's don't operate on positive ground) or install one of these, 5th item down, http://www.casmfg.com/Accessories.htm.

At this point I think the best thing you can put in your tool box is a copy of the service manual. They are available on ebay both in paper and cd. They include wiring diagrams and a lot of mechanical information. The next tool would be the parts manual. They have more exploded views of some of the mechanical items that help if you are trying to rebuild a particular element.
