Vintage Power Window Systems?
#21
Great tips 71_deputy..I am going to check all channels now too. This particular window has been kind of creaking when going up or down, so I now think it might be binding somewhere..I have to say that even with problems like this, the fact that 47 year old electric windows are still working is a testament to Chrysler engineering..Smile

Hello John Mac,

I totally agree that after hearing Tek's additional information regarding what he and his wife were doing with the windows at the time he had the issue, it could very well have put too much of a load on the circuit breaker that's located behind the drivers side kick panel, because in the 1966 and the 1967 cars, the power windows are wired to operate without having the car running, or even having the key in the ignition, so it is very possible to put quite a load on the electrical system, but I'd still be looking at the switches and electrical connections as well.

From what Tek is telling us, his issue doesn't happen every time he raises or lowers one of his windows, so I'd highly doubt that his window glass is binding or the grease has dried out, but seeing that these power window systems are so old, it's always a good idea to check everything as long as you have the door panels off!

Yep, you hit it the nail on the head. Each time this has happened the car was NOT running! I just went out and tested ALL windows no key in the ignition. Dome light and console courtesy lights took a severe hit! Same window got stuck..Took me a few minutes to get the window back up..A little press it would go up and stop, leave it for a few minutes it would go up more..etc.

I am going to pull all the door cards and check all the switches.

What about running relays for the windows? How would I do that? And would that even help?

Hello Tek,

The 1966-1968 cars with power windows did not run relays, only a 30 amp circuit breaker as I mentioned above and on a side note, the 1968 cars used part number 3004 122 for this 30 amp circuit breaker where as the 1966 and 1967 cars used part number 2586 954, but yes relays would be very beneficial as it would take a large draw off of the electrical system. I haven't really looked into how the relays could be added to the power window system yet, but maybe some of our electrical experts could help us out with some ideas on that? Anyone

Yes very helpful once again Richard.

I am going to talk to one of my mates over here who is a bit of a electrical genius. Looking at the system I am not sure why no one has ever repopped these systems. They are not very complicated units. It could be an interesting exercise to find out exactly what it would take to recreate these brand new?

you could put relays on it- but would really complicate things two fold.
another spot to check is the bulkhead connection from the battery side- remember--these spade terminals where only designed to pass 30 amps of power!!!
first thing I would do is replace the circuit breaker and run a new 10 gauge wire from it to the battery. now it will get some good power without going thru the extra connections in the existing system.
my 2 cents!!!

Hey guys I found a guy in Canada that refurbs power window switches and parts. I have 2 pristine single switch units winging their way to me now.

I made a decision that if I find parts, and they are still reasonable in price I will pick them up. Yes I may be turning into a hoarder for Dodge power windows, but I will have working windows that are STILL 100% factory correct.

By the way..He has a full set available too:

Someone should grab this!

That's the way to go on these old Mopars, you need to be your own stocking distributor.

And don't worry on the hoarding bit. Between Richard and I, you've got a long way to go!

Wait till Richard shows you his Mopar parts library.

Shoot Rich, compared to your parts collection, I look like a beginner my friend.

Tek,

Good source there. I have a question into that seller concerning his auction for those rebuilt switches. It's unclear to me if that auction is for a full set of rebuilt switches, or for a single rebuilt single gang switch. If it's a full set, they will be coming to Phoenix unless Rich beats me to them.
