HELP! Dipstick tube broke off just above the block :-( Suggestions?
#1
Well, I knew this would happen as the dipstick tube was "repaired" when I got the car.

Other than pulling the oil pan (which looks like a pain with the steering linkage, tranny lines, and suspension stuff all around there), what could I do? Has anyone ever dealt with this and found a easier way to replace the dipstick tube? Otherwise, i may just RVT silicone the area until I get a chance to drop the pan. The tube is a slightly above the block (only about 3mm or so though) and the break is not clean, the edges are rough and look a little flared.

The car has a '67 383 block if that makes a difference on how the stick is secured or pressed in.

Any advice would be super helpful

I have thread a machine screw in the remaming part and worked it out before, you get down underneath and tap on head of screw with long screw driver knocking it up and out

X2,

Also I used a slide hammer.

I would use a slide hammer. I would make an adapter to fit inside the dipstick on my lathe, but you might be able to take a allen head bolt and make it work. My concern with threading a bolt in is getting metal shavings in the oil pan. If you do thread a bolt in, fill the hole with grease to capture any shavings.

Ok, so there is nothing inside the pan/on the other end of the dipstick securing it that I have to worry about "falling into the pan"??? No grommets or washers or anything like that?

If so, that is awesome and i will get the car up on jackstands later and try what I can given the clearance issues I will have working on the ground.

Nope - no worries about that.
