Pitman Arm Reinstall
#1
Good Morning - '67 Coronet 500, motor is out of the car. Reinstalled the steering gear (box) yesterday and am having trouble getting the pitman arm to slide over the wormgear shaft. Everything seems to line up nicely, including ensuring that the flat keyway slots are matched. The arm is still connected to the cross link. Car was jacked up and I thought maybe that was causing an alignment issue, so I made sure the wheels were straight and put it back on the ground. Still no luck. Unless there is some trick I'm missing, I'm thinking that the guy who pulled this apart 10 years ago damaged the arm in removal without the right tool (okay it was me). Thanks.

Same pitman? Sounds like it. Maybe take a file and clean up any burs you might see.
An extra set of hands moving the box shaft while you wiggle it back on.

I would remove it from the cross link. I would also make sure that you lube the splines - I would use some never seize.

Thanks guys. I'll take it apart on the weekend and inspect the splines, try to clean up as necessary. The replacement on Summit is over $100.
