Voltage drop
#1
Ok boys and girls here's the deal. My voltage drops to 4 or 5 when ideling in gear and stopped. The minute I give her gas, back to 14.3. Checked wire going thru firewall, somebody else beat me to it. Solid wire going thru firewall into car. New battery, alternator, converted over to 3 prong voltage regulator (new) . Any thoughts on how the heck I am losing volts at idle???? I sped my idle up a little to see if that would help any, nope. I hate electrical issuesbeat dead horse

Is this something that just started, or has it always done this? I know a lot of the old voltage regulators did not really charge at idle, they needed to be up above 800 or even 1000 rpm. The battery is sometimes the weak link in this puzzle. I changed my battery to a spiral core Optima in my old 69 I used to have and that helped quite a bit. You can also install an aftermarket solid state regulator, they kick in at a lower rpm.

I think honcho already did that. We talked over the phone last year about the same issue. I told him to go with the flat pack voltage regulator using the dual field alt.
i assume his VR is seeing proper voltage from one source and the source his voltage meter gets sees the drop.?
Just talking out loud...

Another thought is to make sure VR has a good ground. And perhaps replace the VR with a different brand. I had issues with my cheap napa unit.
Bought a high quality unit and all was well.

The flatpack VR is a really good upgrade to do. I have a MA Mopar (black unit), works great.

If it's RPM related, look to the alternator even though it's new.

For a while ago I had the same problem with the volt. It was the copper wire at one of my alternator brushes who had detached from the metal plate. And the power went probably only through the coil spring .
