Help verifying H code engine
#1
Hi All,

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the 1968 coronet 383-4bbl that makes 330HP (VIN code G) and the 383-4bbl 335HP (VIN code H), just by looking at it? Access is limited. But here is what I know:

I was able to see the right lower side of the block (just above the oil pan). Definitely no flat spot with VIN or other numbers stamped on it.
Pad next to distributor has "D383" without "HP" next to it. Below that and to the right is the number "2".
Motor is Turquoise
Air cleaner is not double snorkel
Fender tag shows "62" as the engine code

Since the VIN is an "H" code and the fender tag and build sheet show a 62, I am trying to verify this is the original engine.
I am also not sure if all the research I am doing is yielding the wrong result and the original engine will not be "HP" and instead will just be the 383-4bbl 330HP version.

Any help would be appreciated

AFAIK,

1. The 335hp version was only installed in Road Runner's and Super Bee's in '68
2. VIN's weren't stamped on the lower pan rail in '68, that started in '69.
3. Engine should be turquoise in '68, I believe the orange engines started in '69 also.

Try checking the exhaust manifold numbers, I believe that the manifolds were the same in '68 and '69 for the HP engines. If so, the passenger side manifold should be casting #2806900 and driver's side should be casting # 2843992. If you have those manifolds, I think you have an HP engine. If not, then it is the 330hp version.

But then, does anybody really know for sure? A lot of people claim to be experts, I only claim to NOT be one of them. Good luck and I hope somehow this helps you out.

Thanks! I'll try to get a look at the the exhaust manifolds and possibly get a casting number off the heads.

1. True
2. True. A 68 Vin may or may not be on the back of the block by the oil sending unit.
3. True

An "H" in the VIN and 62 on the tag only tell you it was a 383-4bbl. It does not tell you which HP version is in the car.
