There is an early and late style piston/return spring combo on the forward clutch, if you mix them up this can happen. Let me know what you find Mark.
Good idea working on your own trans. I'm in the middle of reading Carl Munroe's 727 book. Will be working on my own transmissions in the future. I already have some idea how to potentially troubleshoot the trans.
Remember the only thing we changed on the trans was the output shaft. No other parts were changed.
