Go for it and try to make it look period correct! Seen a guy with custom made "valve covers" painted black to cover all the ugly top end of the modern Hemi. I wonder if there is a chrome air cleaner (functional or dummy) that could be mounted on top?? Keep us up to date.

I think I might have a lead on an inexpensive way to purchase the engine. There is a website called erepairables where you can buy wrecked cars very cheap. Most of the cars are wrecked pretty bad. What do you guys think of purchasing a vehicle like that to salvage the motor from? These cars are going for well under $1,000. I figure you could buy the car, strip the engine and anything else you want off of it, and then sell the body for scrap metal and pick up a couple $100 back of what you spend. Is there anything you guys have to say about this? My fear is that there could be internal damage to the engine and you would not know it.
That's not a bad way to go as long as the impact is in the rear or you are sure it didn't hit the drivetrain. When a car gets totaled from an accident, usually it was not on it's last legs like you would find at the junk yard. Plus you get all the incidentals to install it.

Good thing about modern Chryslers is when the airbags deploy, one of the things that happens is the engine shuts off. So even if the oil cooler was ruptured, there'd be no damage to the drivetrain.

Okay, so now I have a dilemma. My dad has a complete 440 out of a '70 Charger (not an hp engine) and a 383 that we don't know what it originally came out of and he said I could have either one if I wanted! Yes, I said HAVE, like as in FREE! Both engines are in good shape and not seized at all. I would of course do at least a basic rebuild if I were to go this route. The modern Hemi would be such a fun project but as far as money goes, which I don't have much of, would be quite a bit more costly. So, what do you guys think?

It's just gonna be a weekend cruiser. No daily driving, bad weather. Just something for me and the family to enjoy and take to shows. I will do all of the work myself and I should have a bell housing to bolt my 727 up to it. I already have the rebuild kit for my tranny, I just need to find time to do it and finding a good drive shaft will be no problem as I have a few good buddies that are big block mopar nuts. I should be able to rebuild the engine and heads for around $1200 to $1500. I will just hone the block and clean it up myself (something I've done a time or two or ten lol) to keep cost down. I'm not needing a race car but a stock bore 440 should scoot me down the black top just fine.
