Was just wondering what methods, for sludge removal, worked for some of you folks? I haven't been in the motor, but did take a peak under the valve cover when I got it, and it had the black goo on the rockers. The oil was black after driving it, but clear as a bell after it sat a day or so. I used Napa flush, ran it 10 minutes longer than it said to, then drained it and it was very black. Now after a short drive, it is nice and clean but I'm sure it couldn't have gotten out all of the gunk.
I have used gunk motor flush on the 03 Dakota w/ 3.9 I used to have. I used to tap on start up. I ran the motor flush before an oil change and it went away. I have heard of people putting in a qt. of trans fluid and running it for a while, but I`ve never tried it.
30 years ago an instructor told us 1qt of kerosene with fresh oil and a filter. Run it 15 minutes or so and change oil and filter again. Can't say if it works though, never tried it.

i have heard of them using diesel at flushing out the system ..... it works ....???? dunno ....
Sometimes you can cause other problems trying to remove the sludge - a piece could break off and plug up a vital passage, be careful.
All I have done, so far, is a flush drian, and fill. Everything I saw, on the rocker arms, looked to be wet and gooie and not solid. I would hope it desolves instead of breaking off chunks of something. I had read somewhere, a good combo was 20% Marvile Mystery Oil and Pensoil Ultra, and cut the change intrivales in half for a few changes, don't know though?

I would do that and not worry too much about the sludge, unlees it is so bad that it's blocking passages for oil return. Like Jeff said you could do more damage or block oil pick-up screen.
