Some Rear Driveline Restoration...
#1
Here's a few shots of something I did this summer. First the "before" photos. No surprise for those who've done this before. This is the first time the driveline had ever been apart...

...And, the "after" photos. Now I can't call it a "survivor" anymore, but it really needed some work. The brakes were S-H-O-T!

If I can answer any questions about methods, materials, finishes, etc., let me know. Happy to share the knowledge.

Cheers!

Wow, very nice. Where did you marking info from? That is an awesome job!

The markings are essentially a compilation of what I uncovered on mine, and internet-based research of similar cars. I found remnants of original markings as I disassembled and cleaned the assembly and components. The "637" P/N code and "Circle-XXl" marking were too far gone to be legible, but the other marks were more or less there. I looked at a lot of internet photos to get color matches and extent of markings. For the two I couldn't read, I found an excellent resource on Roger Gibson's web site. He has documentation of a Charger built within a month of mine, at the same assembly plant (St. Louis), that I used as reference for the P/N code and XXl markings.

Was mine originally exactly like this? I can't say for sure, but there were marking remnants there, and my research got me as close as I think is possible. I'm not going for a points-restoration anyway. I just really enjoy getting things close to original. And, since the car is all-original and unmolested, I feel that I owe the car the best effort I can if/when I restore something. As they say, "they're only original once", but I'm trying to do it justice when I "ruin" the originality.

Roger's a great guy, I called him a few times when I was doing my car. Your attention to detail is super!

Thanks, I appreciate it! I think I'm a frustrated restoration shop owner, but can't figure out a way to pay the bills with that, and quit my day-job, haha.

I'm jealous!!! That is way nicer than ours. Makes me wanna take it back apart and re-do it!
One thing I caught on yours. Why didn't you straighten the front shackle? Looks like someone hooked onto it at one time.
I'm gonna be up at night thinking about how nice that thing looks compared to ours now! Cool

Thanks for the kind words; I appreciate it. I probably went overboard for a driver, but once I get into a project I just "nerd out", and get completely absorbed in it.

Yeah, I looked at the spring hanger, and tried to figure out what happened to it. Maybe it was transport damage, or the car got towed at one time. I was going to get another hanger and replace it, but figured it wasn't hurting anything, and it was original to the car. Those things are pretty tough, so didn't see a good way to try and straighten it out, so I elected to just detail it and leave it alone. Eventually, I may run across another one and replace it, but for now I'm just leaving it as-is.

Thanks,

JD
