I would add that how you set your car up for drag racing has a lot to do with what class you will be competing in. If you're going to run in a Super Stock class, you will need a completely different combination than you will need for a serious E.T. based bracket class car. Some of the most successful bracket cars that I ran against in my many years of bracket racing weren't always the fastest cars in the class, they were the most consistant cars in the class.
Also build your car as a complete package of parts that work well together, rather than going out and buying lots of expensive parts that aren't designed to work together. Every single part that you install on your car, no matter what part it might be, will affect other parts on your car. Having an engine that produces 500 horsepower mated to a stock transmission and suspension and the wrong rear differential gear ratio will not put you in the winners circle, as most of the time you will be taken out in the first round by someone with a well thought out race car with an engine, transmission, suspension and other related systems that all work well as a complete package.
As far as building a safe race car, I'd advise folks to get a copy of the latest N.H.R.A. rule book, or whatever racing association that you want to compete in and build your car to meet or exceed those standards and you'll be as safe as possible in a race car.
