What is the detent lever? I can shift it in all gears. It has a b&m shifter. We checked ti see if it was hooked up.

Detent lever is a kickdown, bad thing is you have to take you're tranny pan off. It's behind the lower valve body. First I would check all the linkage make sure everything is there and working like previously mentioned. Thats the easiest route.
