Anyone here on the DCR purchased an aftermarket windshield glass for their 1966 or 1967 Coronet in particular, or any Mopar in the past year or so?

This is one area in aftermarket restoration parts that I really don't have a quality resource for, but I do have a friend who handles AMD products if I go that route. The reason that I'm asking, is because I'm planning on replacing the original factory installed windshield glass on my 1966 Coronet 500 2 door hardtop, so I'd really like to find the very best quality of aftermarket glass available to help avoid leaking and other issues after installation.

As mentioned, I have seen the AMD windshields being offered on Ebay as shown in the auction below.

Pros and cons of this glass?
Is this the best current pricing for Mopar aftermarket windshields?

I've heard that one of the problems with some of the aftermarket glass, is that it's thinner than the original factory glass, which causes major water leakage and wind noise when used with the aftermarket windshield gaskets which aren't as well made as the original factory gaskets were either.

I have no water leaking issues with my current original windshield, but it is pitted after being in place since the car was new and I will also need to remove the windshield in order to remove my complete dashboard assembly for painting and restoration, so I'm a little worried about the problems that I've heard about others having after installing an aftermarket windshield glass and gaskets. :p

I put a Pilkington brand in Max since I read and heard from others they are the best. Safelite sold it and put it in for me and lifetime warranty if they install it. He let me help though so I didn't feel so bad having someone else do work on my car.

Wished I could have found and NOS seal for it though since aftermarket ones look crappy on inside after installed.

I don't have any good glass for my silver RT just yet. I was thinking of having a complete set made. Everything I have has scratches on them.

What Andy and Steve asked times two buddy! Do you have a quality source for 66-67 B-Body windshield, back window glass and side window glass that you could share with us my friend? I thought that there was a similar discussion on the old forum..................

Oops, didn't mean to get your hopes up too high. I don't have any specific source. I have talked to a couple of people who had their cars "professionally" restored. AKA overpriced restorations. They commented on having a set of date coded glass made.

I've had windshields replaced with new glass on both of my 67 Coronets, and on my 68 Charger, and 68 Barracuda. I had the original rear glass on my 67 Coronet hardtop reinstalled a couple years ago (along with a new front glass) after the car was painted. I had the glass installer use reproduction front and rear gaskets from Steele Rubber parts. On some of my cars, I had problems with leakage, on other cars I didn't. On my 67 Coronet hardtop, both the front and back glass leaked everywhere after installation. I took it back to the glass shop several times and they never did fix the leaks. Eventually they stopped returning my calls.
Finally I called every glass shop in the phone book. Most had no knowledge of how glass should be installed on these cars. Most didn't want to touch it. I found one that said, "No problem". I took it to them, and they said most shops are clueless about the old cars, but their techs worked on old cars all the time. I picked the car up the next day, and no more leaks. The leaks had nothing to do with the glass (new or old) or the new gaskets. The leaks were because very few people are left who really know how to install the glass on these cars.

The guy that came out to put my glass in was having problems I could tell, and ask him if he ever installed one on a `67 Coronet and he said no. So I suggested we get my factory manual out and do it that way and he agreed and we had a much funner time getting it done and he learned something new. I gave him an extra $20 bucks for being patient and letting me help.

Wow Jim, after reading your post above, I went through a whole lot of emotions and I'm left with only one question for you my friend.......do you think that any of the folks who actually did a proper install on your Coronet's glass would like to make a trip to Phoenix AZ in the near future to enjoy some beautiful weather and do some glass work on an old bright Yellow 66 Coronet 500?

Seriously though, do you remember which aftermarket windshields you used Jim, especially on your 67 Coronet? Since my car isn't very "factory stock" anymore, I'm not all that concerned about having the new glass being "date coded" as mentioned in the Moparts thread that Rich gave us the link to, I just want a high quality, correct factory tint colored windshield that won't be a royal p.i.t.a. to have someone here in Phoenix install. Even though I won't need to have my new windshield installed until after all of my interior paint work is done and I've restored and reinstalled my dash assembly, I do want to have a new windshield on hand BEFORE removing my original one.
