Hey all,
took my vent window assemblies apart to get them rechromed...
the little "nubs" that hold them together were ground down in order to get them apart....
now I want to put them together again, and am wondering how to preen the remaining "nubs" down
to hold it all together....
do I use a soldering gun to melt them down, or pound them (preen) them with a small hammer and a chisel?
any ideas?
thanks,
Mark
Well guessing by the crickets in this room. .....
I dont think anyone has ever torn down a vent window assembly to that degree before. How did the chrome plating turn out? Did you get it back together? Would you advise others if they were to try it?
I've only done one set, and it was completely torn down by a restoration company. The reason why I had someone else do it was because is because I didn't know how to deal with those little nubs.
Hey guys....
the little nubs you are referring to are "peened" over.....these need to be drilled out in order to get the vent window chrome separated from the assembly.....
there are extra nubs that are not used during original assembly, and these are used to reassemble the unit....
my chrome turned out very nice....it was originally in good shape with some minor pitting, but looks great now....
apparently, I need to use some clamps to set the assembly together, and peen the remaining nubs over in order to put it back together......
if you go to dodgecharger.com.....there are some great pix and a step by step explanation of the process...
good luck.....will post results when I get mine reassembled....
thanks,
Mark
Hey guys....
I just finished reassembly on the vent wings....
I used a chisel to peen over the small nubs.....
It worked perfectly, however, I overdid it a bit on the top 2 of the pax side vent wing....I had previously drilled these 2 out to disassemble it, and hit them a bit too hard....the metal is a bit narrower there, and I now have 2 small humps on the outside of the assembly and the chrome is cracked/spidered a tad....
my advice is to just go slow, and not hit them too hard....
they are nice and tight now, and should look nice when put back on the car....
Mark
do you have any pics, I'd love to see your progress.
Hey guys,
I don't have any pix...but go to this link....it explains everything....

My vent wing assemblies are complete now....I used a bonding agent in leiu of welding, in addition to peening over the little nubs....they seem tight and very solid now.....
take care,
Mark
