Hello,
My 66 500 was born a poly 318, automatic. It was converted to a newer 318 and later a 4spd. The car is now without an engine or tranny. Should I look for a Poly or newer 318? Is it hard to convert to a 383 or 440? Thanks for the advice.
Welcome Rob, your engine choice will be determined by what would like to do with your car.
Do you have any pics? We live pics.
Dump a 440 in her,it's alot of fun
What honcho said, a 383 or 440 at this point in time, you'll be a lot happer!!
Since it is a v8 car a 383 or 440 will go right in with out having to change the K frame. You will have to get the correct engine brackets and motor mounts. And since there were more 440's made than 383's (and no substitude for cubic inches) Look for a 440.
And a 727-B transmission, driveshaft and U-joints, higher capacity leaf springs and rear end center section (sure-grip) and better higher-rate shocks, otherwise the 440 will start to show you the weak spots with all that extra torque the 440 will give you. Which rear end do you have in the car at present? You may want to consider higher rated torsion bars if the car will see mostly street driving, then there are exhaust compnent considerations like stock cast iron or tube headers. You may also want to consider a Mopar Performance crate small-block or a 360 4-barrel. What kind of useage are you looking to achive with this project? Drag racer, street cruiser, daily transportation?
I wonder why I bother trying..................
Ok, found a 413 FOR 200.00. I have a 23 spline B-body Trans and a 18 spline B/E Trans. Don't know which I will use. Will be taking my son to Seattle to look at a university so I will try and visit Schumacher for a set of motor mounts. Thanks to all for your Ideas.

if you just want a car to cruise around in, a 318 will do. i would stay away from a poly, they are much harder to find parts for especially if you want to modify it. la 318`s and parts are really easy to find. if you want to drive it a lot consider the MPG you will get from a big block, my coronet w/440 gets 9mpg so i drive it but not much. if the 413 needs a rebuild pistons are difficult to find or so i heard. if its a motorhome or industrial motor it could need some different parts to make it work in a car.
