Hello, I installed the axles yesterday with new bearings/seals etc. on the 8 3/4 742 differential and the drivers side has about 1/8" end play in it. Adjusting the end play on the passengers side collar to specs makes no difference to the drivers side whether the drivers side axle is pushed in or pulled out the end play on the passenger side stays the same as adjusted. I did not check the drivers side end play before pulling it out but this doesn't seem right. Especially when I can push in the drivers side axle hard and hear it clunk while the car is in the air. I never heard that while driving the car. Did the new bearings not get pressed in all the way down? Is this normal?

It sounds like the thrust buttons aren't in the center section, so the axles have nothing to push against when you adjust the right side. Did you have green bearings in it before?
I agree with Mike, I would pull axles back out and see if trust is in place on carrier with a flashlight.
Don't know if you've done it already, but if you pull an axle, just jack up the one side. The fluid will all go to other side and you won't lose any. if you see the thrust button, repeat on other side to make sure it's on that side as well, as they need to push on each other.
I took the drivers axle back to the machine shop and he was able to push the lock alittle further down, I guess he was scared to crush the bearing the 1st time. I reinstalled them both and I have about a 1/16" of play in the drivers side now which is fine but still not adjustable by the passengers side adjuster, I installed the drivers side axle first again. The passenger is adjusted fine to specs which is also at about 1/16" (.06). I drove the car with the
rear axle over speed bumps while turning abunch of times and didn't hear no clacking noise so it seems all good now. What happens if the thrust button isn't in place? Thank you
If the button isn't in place, you can't adjust the end play. They act as a spacer that connects both axles together, allowing them to be adjusted from the one side. If you were able to adjust the right side, then you have them in place. Sometimes they fall out when pulling the axles, other times they get removed when non-adjustable bearings are installed.
Sounds like your set but I would put a few miles on it and check again to be sure . Have fun!!

Well I can say I have done similar things years ago also LOL
And the stack of NOS sure grips for $50 and I only bought one.........
