My '58 came to me a few years back with a rock chip in the front windshield. It is a small star shape, less in diameter than a nickel. It has a small horizontal crack that extends less than an inch in both directions. I cannot imagine trying to replace that original piece.
Is there anything to gain by having someone attempt a repair, or should I be trying to stabilize the area somehow to prevent it worsening?

What do you have to lose? If you don't touch it, you may see it spread, then you'll have to replace the windshield. Windshield companies are starting to do repairs much more now, and it's acceptable to the insurance company. I'd get prices from them first.
The repair will stop it from spreading. but they are not invisable. I believe they can repair anything smaller than a dollar bill. and I also believe rainex and the like will eat the repair. so the real question is a replacement avalible.
Sound advice. Who would think to go to the professionals? Confused
If you are going to get a replacement, I recommend autometaldirect.
Have you seen the wrap-around glass on my girl? someone is recreating these?
