Mine are now in full chrome so to say - see picture... but think I can see some hint of red coler up in one corner

Is it some special color - Seen Tail panel red in some ads in US car parts store.

Or is it some red color with colorcode : XXX?

Question : Where the 500s tail panel always painted?

(In my ignorance I bought some dark dark red that matches the taillight color - but have still not painted it...)

Hello Anders,

Yes sir, the 1966 Coronet 500 models came from the factory with two thin stripes of a special Red paint applied to the chrome pot metal trunk lid mounted finish panel as shown below. I have a source for this paint but I need to find that source. As soon as I do I will post it here for you.

Agreed. Yes, it was always red on the 66 500. Heres one I had in the 80's. I repainted the red but went with the closest match to the original that I could find at the time. But as you can see in the photo, it was a bit too bright. In my case the ridged center section was so pitted and dull that I painted that part flat black. It didn't look too bad for an original paint unrestored car that I paid $650 for. Wish I still had it.

That is a very cool 66 Jim and it looks as if you had a set of the 1966 factory Dodge style "mag" wheel covers on it! I haven't seen a set of those in a very long time and never on a Coronet!

I should add that there is a limited source (currently depleted...sorry...) for a repro 66 trunk finish panel.

A guy made 6 because he really wanted one for his resto. I bought the last one and as soon as it gets here, I'll post up a picture and give you my opinion.

He said he can get more made, but has to do it in batches of 6, so I think he has to wait for orders. I think he made it out of stainless with a water jet.

Seriously though, it will be very interesting to see this part once you've receive it.

They were optional on all 66-67 Dodge B and C bodies, and 67 A bodies (when the A bodies were equipped with 14" rims). My 66 500 didn't have them originally when I bought the car, but I picked up a set at a salvage yard that I put on the car. Back in the 70's and early 80's when some of these cars were still in the hands of the original owners, I would occasionally see 66 and 67 Coronets with these wheel covers (more often on 67 Coronet RTs though). Should have kept them when I sold the car back in the 80's. I think the buyer went with aftermarket wheels anyway.
