You can pop the radiator cap and wait for thermostat to open, then rev motor up. If you see coolant flowing, the pump is most likely in good shape.

As for flushing it yourself, its probably better to take it to a radiator shop and let them flush it for you. There are kits you can buy in the store, but from past experience they can sometimes cause the problem to get worse (ie cause a leak where there was none before)
Thanks for the info guys. I appreciate it. Last question, how would I tell if my radiator has a leak in it?
You see stuff on the ground. Buy a thermostat gasket,(cheap$) pull out the the thermostat, put on the new gasket and run without it. If you still overheat the problem is not your thermostat.

Another method is to look at the radiator.. you'll see darker spots where the coolant is leaking from.
