Hey guys! I just picked up a 71 Coronet with a 318. I have a few questions. 1st off, It is still awfully cold in maine and im wondering whether this is a manual, or mechanical choke for the carb (if manual where the hell is the ol girl?!) Secondly, i was wondering how to work the factory FM converter on this thing, if there was different ones i can take a picture of it, basically a knob on bottom to adjust, and a switch on the middle with three positions (far left = some radio, middle = nothing, far right = nothing.) Any help would be appreciated!
Better get a pic uploaded. Never heard of a factory FM converter. It would just be an AM/FM model radio. A manual choke usually refers to a pull/push lever on the dash that you use to operate the choke - LONG GONE as factory installed by 71. By 71 Mopar was using electric chokes, I do believe.
Yea but ya gotta love the manual chokes,hell they always work!
No doubt about it, sure is nice to be able to to turn the choke on, off, or anywhere in between, no matter how hot or cold the engine is. Tuckerboynton, are you sure the radio switch you are talking about isn't a front/rear speaker switch?
hey sorry guys, ill grab a pic of the converter, not sure if it was factory actually now that you say it. Also with the electric choke do you have to push the gas down full before starting to to activate it or what?
Yes, floor the gas pedal, then let off. That will set the choke and squirt fuel into the carb to prime it. In a normal situation, when you shut the engine off, it is hot, so the choke is open. Then when you let the car sit for a while, it cools off, so it needs to be choked to start. Usually if you just leave the car off for just a short while, it will start back up just by turning the key. But usually each carbureted car will have it's own "personality". In my opinion getting to know the "quirks" of an older car is one of the fun things about owning one.
