hi there
cruising on the highway around 60mph my exhaust gets this terrible drone to it which I can't stand.
if I back it off a couple of hundread revs it goes away.
its a 383 with stock headers down to a 2 1/2" system with only two mufflers, one each side.
someone told me to install a joiner between the two pipes, will this from anyone's experience eliminate the issue, or any other ideas.
cheers.
a crossover/h/x-pipe could cut it down. it could be the mufflers, flowmaster/chambered mufflers are known for drone. it could be a simple as changing mufflers. does it have a full exhaust all the way out to the back of the car?
X2
Yes it has flow master mufflers, and the exhaust goes out past the fuel tank which is another issue of rattling and heating up tank.
i was looking at it and was thinking of going under leaf and dumping it toward the ground behind rear tyres , instead of running between leaf and tank.
change the mufflers, I would recommend a straight through oval muffler such as dynomax ultraflow, magnaflow or pypes race pro. you should be able to get one the same size as the dronemasters you have now and just swap them out with no modifications. hopefully they were not welded to the pipes.
I love my Flowmasters! hahahaha!!! Installed a X pipe from summit and it knocked it way down. One problem is the length of pipe behind the muffler. I had Flowmasters on my '71 vette and the tail pipe was 12" and it never droned. I used the Super 44s on my Dart with crossover and it is hard to pick up a drone but without crossover I got the drone. and yes a muffler change to fully remove the drone but that cost $$ but the again so does the crossover.
My '66 318 poly has flowmasters with full tail pipes and it drones a lot 'til I hit 50mph, then it quiets down. Had a crossover welded in just back of the crossmember & it helped a bit.
I just run straight headers, got all kinds of good noise to listen to and with 3" pipe,it's really not all that loud!
X2 Honcho, I'm still young at heart and ears! I love the thunder...
I run 2.75 inch duals with turbos and I have the "Drone" too........
