If you look in the owners manual, it will say that the transmission is filled for life and should never need servicing. LOL. I don't think they though we'd still be driving them 47 years later.
One of my old bosses subscribes to the theory of never changing the fluid. He says that the varnish buildup protects the transmission.

What about over heating XD
Overheating will definetely shorten it's life. I always subscribed to the look/sniff test. If it started to look brown and started to smell burnt, I changed the fluid.
