I have a 1967 Dodge Coronet 440 w/ a New Process a-833 4 speed transmission. It has a serial # of w2349G200631.
The problem I'm having is that in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear it is making a chattering noise. When I shift into 4th, it pretty much goes away. I have two different people who seems knowledable but are not transmission guys. One says it's the pressure plate in the clutch is going bad. The other guy says it sounds like the main bearing in the clutch is gone? I am not a motor head by any means and would like some advice before I shoot off to the transmission shop. I ask the guys if being low on tranmission fluid, (it's got a slow leak on the reverse plug) could cause the noise and they said no. Also, if anyone has any idea what the cost of doing a rebuild of my transmission vs. going out and finding a replacement. Thanks Mark
If the main bearings are gone, it will make quite a noise in all gears but final drive because there is no load on the bearigs. The main bearings are in the transmission. They can be damages by lack of oil as well. So if the noise you are talking about is completely gone in 4th it is most likely the main bearings.
