Full Version: has anyone here used a edelbrock top set ? heads , intake , cam , carb on a B or RB engine.

I have a 1965 383 engine in my 67 coronet.
its still in real good condition after the last rebuild .030 over flat top pistons , original steel crank and rods.

the one draw back is it still has the 516 closed chamber heads with the small exhaust valves.
new springs ect on them , good heads but not much for HP.

I have a preformer intake and 600 edelbrock carb & electronic ignition.
Ive stuck with the old original exhaust manifolds since I didnt figure I had much in the way of exhaust flow with the small valve heads.
727 stock convertor and 3:23 sure grip.

Im going to take the top end off this winter and was considering getting one of the edelbrock top kits , aluminum heads , cam , intake ect they sell as a kit and adding a set of full tube 1 7/8 headers.
I just wanted to know if any of you had used their set up and how it worked out or would it be just as good to buy a set of heads and pick my own cam and reuse the preformer intake I have now plus add the headers.

Im not looking to build a race car just to juice the old girl up some to aprox 325 to 350 HP range .

I haven't used them but I'd make sure to get the small chamber heads because you'll lose roughly 1 point (compression) going to open chamber heads. You won't see as much HP gain. You can get away with more compression with aluminum heads. I'd also go with a 750 cfm carb too.
if it were me I would pick my own stuff. eddy heads are great out of the box. never been crazy about edelbrocks cams. I have always like comp cams XE cams. don't go crazy with the cam though or the motor will be lazy in the low rpms, esp. with 323 gears. maybe the XE 268 or 274? do the pistons have valve reliefs? you don't want a valve hitting the piston.
A Camp Cams 280H grind advanced 4 degrees works good on the street - had one in a 383 in my '71 pickup.

I will prob just get the heads { small chamber } run my preformer intake and add the 750 and headers.
Im going to stick with the 3:23s we drive the 67 alot each summer aprox 3,500 to 4,000 miles
