Hello Boys,

have finished running my 318 in the 69.....runs great....

I have developed an oil leak on the passenger side behind and above the oil filter....near where the tranny dust cover plate and the block meet....

I checked the security of the oil pan bolts....they seemed a bit loose, so I tightened them up....

After I ran the engine up to temp....I saw that I still had some drips of oil under the motor....
I investigated, and figured I cinch the bolts up a bit....It appeared that I had not tightened them at all....

I checked the service manual and it says to torque them to 15 lbs.....

any thoughts on this?

thanks,

Mark
Sounds like a crushed oil pan gasket. You may have splits in the gasket and would need to replace it. Other than that, you should check the oil filter gasket as well. Sometimes an old piece of gasket material from the old filter gets stuck to the engine block where the gasket adheres to and you get a leak from that. It's easy to have happen. You can buy a dye that you add to your engine oil that shows up with a black light lamp and it is supposed to pin point the leak....some sort of kit...it might work. Hope I have helped some.
I found on a 318 I built a couple years back, there is a 'washer' that is between the oil filter and the block, if its not lined up correctly it will leak oil at a quick rate when running. This may not be your issue but I chased down a mystery leak for quite some time on that motor...
I know its a bit higher but could it be the oil sending unit?
Hello All,

I just got home and investigated the oil leak some more.....

nothing from the top of the motor....oil sending unit, manifold, and valve covers all dry...
oil pan also looks good....

it appears that the oil filter mounting plate is not sealing properly.....

I have cleaned the area, and torqued the fitting a bit more.....hoping this will seal the leak...
the area around the mounting plate was seeping oil....will see how this works....

anyone else dealt with this problem....any other solutions other than replacing the plate and gasket?

thanks,

Mark
You just have to change the gasket.
Did you look into what piper had an issue with?
its not only the gasket..its how the plate lines up there is a bunch of holes and if not sitting correctly it will leak no matter how tight it is....let me see if I can find some threads where others had the same issue
check out the first picture in this thread, this is where my issue was I didnt have the thing sitting flush and it dripped away
